"c >> mason: good evening, scott is on assignment i'm anthony mason. it's getting nasty in the presidential campaign with each side accusing the other of lying about mitt romney's role of bain si capital and romney demanding an apology. with jobs the number-one issue in the election, the obama campaign says romney was running the private equity firm at a nvme when it was investing in dimpanies that were sending american jobs overseas. romney insists he'd already left efin at the time in question. we'll hear from him in just a moment. t rst, wyatt andrews look at romney and his role at bain olpital. r: reporter: when mitt romney was c.e.o. of bain capital in the '90s, bain invested in a series of companies, including call centers and manufacturers that expanded overseas, sometimes at the expense of american workers. after those investments were first reported in the "washington post," the obama campaign pounced.
5:31 pm
>> mitt romney's companies were pioneers in outsourcing u.s. jobs to low-wage countries. gn reporter: when the president's campaign then charged that romney as a bain manager personally shipped jobs overseas, the romney campaign denied that saying it never happened. outsourcing is now a crucial issue for romney who's running on a platform of american jobs. >> it's because i love jobs! i want more good jobs for the omerican people! >> reporter: romney says he took a leave of absence from bain capital in february of 1999 to run the salt lake olympics, which means he never had control of the companies doing the outsourcing. however, in the years romney describes himself as on leave from bain, here's how bain was describing him in reports filed epor the securities and exchange commission. "sole shareholder, sole firector, chief executive nt,icer, president, and even managing director" of a firm he e wa he wasn't managing. ame obama campaign suggested that romney might have been lying to the s.e.c., but several experts told us not so. o putting that information on
5:32 pm
that form does not necessarily mean that you're an active wnnager of the company. >> reporter: tom storkin is a former s.e.c. investigator and enforcement attorney. c's entirely possible he owned this company but didn't run the e.mpany? >> that is correct. he could have been on a leave of on sense. >> reporter: romney would have made money if the companies doing that outsourcing sold at a profit, but, anthony, the s.e.c. documents do not show that romney ran bain after '99 or that he personally shipped jobs overseas. >> mason: thanks, wyatt. earlier today chief political correspondent jan crawford talked to governor romney. >> reporter: governor romney, the obama campaign is saying you either committed a felony by lying to the s.e.c. or you're orng to the american people tout when you left bain youtal. what do you say to that? >> well, i think this kind of atatement from the obama team is really shocking. it's ridiculous. and it's beneath the dignity of the presidency. thimply think the president has
5:33 pm
ld becognize that this should be a campaign about the direction of the country and these personal attacks have to stop. >> reporter: you say it's ridiculous. but why is this there this lscrepancy? you said you left bain in 1999 yet bain is listing you as c.e.o. until 2002. why were you listed as c.e.o. until 2002? >> the documents show that there's a difference between ownership-- which is that i owned shares in bain but did not manage bain. otleft as everyone knows to run ee olympics in february of 1999. i was full time running the olympics. i had no role whatsoever in the management of bain after i went to the olympics and that's been demonstrated by people who work at bain, by all of the documents but i still retained an ownership interest. >> reporter: even if you weren't making daily managerial decisions, though, doesn't the buck stop with you? >> actually, when you leave an enterprise and you have other
5:34 pm
people who are managing the , terprise, who take fsponsibility for the stvestment decisions, who decide s o's going to get hired and rered, who decide compensation decisions, they're the managers, they're the people running the opsiness. >> reporter: so you don't remember a board meeting? you don't remember talking about whether or not there should be outsourcing jobs overseas? ny you remember any involvement with bain capital from 1999 on? >> jan, i had no involvement with the management of bain capital after february of 1999. >> reporter: do you think the president owes you an apology because his campaign has suggested you're a criminal or a liar? >> absolutely. my goodness, what kind of a president would have a campaign that says something like that about the nominee of another party? this is reckless and absurd on his part. >> mason: jan, there's also a brewing controversy over those u.s. olympic uniforms for american athletes that were made in china. avd romney have anything to say about that? >> reporter: anthony, i did ask
5:35 pm
him about those uniforms and here's what he had to say. p> i don't know the particulars of the circumstance so i really can't comment on that. i presume they have sponsors reat are associated with uniforms and matters of that nature so i'm not going to weigh into the decisions made in that regard. >> mason: thanks, jan. jan, ralph lauren has just d nounced the uniforms made for the next olympics will be made cs the united states. a federal court in washington heard closing arguments today in a challenge to texas' voter i.d. law. the law would require texans to show government-issued photo identification in order to vote. the u.s. justice department says this would keep thousands from voting and violates the voting rights act. more now from anna werner. er.reporter: college students demarieno hill and dominique ndnday are registering voters in houston's third ward, a place where many minorities aren't eigned up to vote. it thank you. gn okay, then. >> reporter: they don't like the new law. >> we already have an uphill struggle to encourage people to register so now when we tell
5:36 pm
them they have to jump through these hoops it's more of a struggle. >> reporter: the law requires texas' 13 million voters to tresent a photo i.d. at the polls and not just any photo , on, only a driver's license, passport, military i.d., gun permit, or a state-issued identification card will be accepted. attorney general greg abbot says it's to combat election fraud. >> in this last election in may there were more than 200 votes cast for corpses and when you have dead people casting votes you see we have a threat to the integrity of the election itstem. >> reporter: abbot points to 62 fraud cases prosecuted by his office over ten years. st during the same time period, there were 39 million votes cast. >> it's statistically not there. >> reporter: kim keenan is general counsel for the n.a.a.c.p. she says the law passed by the republican-controlled legislature creates new obstacles to voting for groups
5:37 pm
who traditionally vote democratic. >> this really affects seniors and young people and people of color. >> reporter: in texas, getting a o i.o i.d. is harder for some. nearly a third of the state's 254 counties don't even have a driver's license office. attorney general abbot concedes that as many as 100,000 to 200,000 people in texas don't have photo i.d.s but he says the tiw is necessary. so no political motives here, is what you would say? hindhe motive behind a photo i.d. law is to prevent cheating at the ballot box. >> reporter: a federal court is expected to decide later this summer whether the law will be allowed to go into effect. anna werner, cbs news, dallas. on mason: j.p. morgan chase said today that high-risk investment that went bad cost the bank a lot more than $2 billion c.e.o. jamie dimon first reported. j.p. morgan gone said losses are up to $5.8 billion and could top
